Aim of this Special Interest Group

The number of residents in Japan having ties overseas is on the rise, and currently, more than twenty thousand children, who do not speak Japanese as their first language, live in Japan. In order to support these children in school, a scheme for sharing and utilizing various multilingual course materials, school-related documents, corpora, and lexicons that have been manually created, translated, and accumulated by numerous people, is needed. A multidisciplinary group of researchers and students participating in this SIG will aim to improve multilingual support by investigating the needs raised in schools and applying information and communication technology grounded on the Language Grid.

Research, development, and dissemination of generic tools (as well as mechanism to scale up language resources through end-user resource creation and utilization), which meet school-specific multilingual requirements, will be carried out to support the following needs that have been confirmed so far in schools with non-native Japanese-speaking students:

  1. Assisting Multilingual School Document Creation
  2. Assisting Multilingual Career Guidance Material Creation, and Supporting Multilingual Communication between Teachers and Parents
  3. Assisting Course Instruction Using Simplified Japanese
  4. Supporting Communication, Self-Study, and Japanese Learning by Non-Native Japanese Speaking School Children
  5. Fostering Intercultural Communication Ability in School Children
